Help save Hussein: Email the new Chair of the Saudi Arabian Human Rights Commission

Dear Dr Hala al-Tuwaijri,

I am writing to you today asking you to call on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to stay Hussein Abo al-Kheir’s execution, release him and for the Crown Prince to stick to his word to abolish the death penalty for non-lethal drug offences.

Hussein is a 57-year-old Jordanian national who is at risk of execution in the Kingdom for drug related charges. He has been sentenced to death twice in the past seven years because of a confession extracted under torture - torture that has been acknowledged and brought up by the UK government.

Last year, the Human Rights Commission tweeted that the decline in the number of executions in 2020 was due to a moratorium imposed on drug related offences, and crediting the Crown Prince for his reform efforts: "In 2018, the Crown Prince announced that the Kingdom was working on judicial and legal reforms that would result in a decrease of executions, alongside Vision 2030. We are now seeing the fruits of this labour".[1]

Unfortunately, yet again, these commitments to judicial and legal reforms are not being adhered to. 20 men have been executed for alleged drugs charges in the past three weeks. This is not the vision 2030 that the Crown Prince has been promising.

I know that on your appointment as the Chair of the Human Rights Commission, you said, “Saudi Arabia has made great and honorable strides in the field of human rights.”[2]

I am asking you to make this statement a reality by calling on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman:

1. To immediately stay Hussein Abo al-Kheir’s execution
2. To release Hussein Abo al-Kheir 
3. To impose a formal moratorium on executions for non-lethal drug offences

I am asking you to make sure that Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission upholds the standards it has committed to.
